Two Dogmas of Neo-Empiricism

چکیده

This article critically examines the contemporary resurgence of empiricism (or “neo-empiricism”) in philosophy, psychology, neuropsychology, and artificial intelligence. This resurgence is an important and positive development. It is the first time that this centuries-old empiricist approach to cognition is precisely formulated in the context of cognitive science and neuroscience. Moreover, neo-empiricists have made several findings that challenge amodal theories of concepts and higher cognition. It is argued, however, that the theoretical foundations of and the empirical evidence for neo-empiricism are not as strong as is usually claimed by its proponents. The empirical evidence for and against neo-empiricism is discussed in detail. In this article, I critically examine the contemporary resurgence of empiricism (or “neo-empiricism”) in philosophy, psychology, neuropsychology, and artificial intelligence. This resurgence is an important and positive development. It is the first time that this centuries-old empiricist approach to cognition is precisely formulated in the context of cognitive science and neuroscience. Moreover, neo-empiricists have made several findings that challenge amodal theories of concepts and higher cognition. I argue however that the theoretical foundations of and the empirical evidence for neo-empiricism are not as strong as is usually claimed by its proponents (see also Machery,“Concept Empiricism”). In the first section, I describe the two central dogmas of neo-empiricism. In the second section, I discuss two theoretical issues. In the last section, I consider some empirical evidence for and against neo-empiricism.

Indeterminacy and the analytic/synthetic distinctions: a survey

It is often assumed that there is a close connection between Quine’s criticism of the analytic/synthetic distinction, in ‘Two dogmas of empiricism’ and onwards, and his thesis of the indeterminacy of translation, in Word and Object and onwards. Sometimes this is just assumed, since both are criticisms of traditional or naive concepts of linguistic meaning. Sometimes there is an argument to supp...

Two dogmas of conceptual empiricism: implications for hybrid models of the structure of knowledge.

Concepts seem to consist of both an associative component based on tabulations of feature typicality and similarity judgments and an explanatory component based on rules and causal principles. However, there is much controversy about how each component functions in concept acquisition and use. Here we consider two assumptions, or dogmas, that embody this controversy and underlie much of the cur...

The Future of the A Priori

50 years ago, in “Two Dogmas of Empiricism,” W. V. Quine (1953) launched a discussion of philosophical notions of analyticity and the a priori. On this occasion, I want to try to arrive at a judgment about the upshot of that discussion. I will not engage in exegesis. I do not think of Quine’s writings as sacred texts or as existing independently of the discussions of others then and now. These ...

‘Two Dogmas’—All Bark and No Bite? Carnap and Quine on Analyticity

Recently O’Grady argued that Quine’s “Two Dogmas” misses its mark when Carnap’s use of the analyticity distinction is understood in the light of his deflationism. While in substantial agreement with the stress on Carnap’s deflationism, I argue that O’Grady is not sufficiently sensitive to the difference between using the analyticity distinction to support deflationism, and taking a deflationary...

PUTNAM VERSUS QUINE ON REVISABILITY AND THE ANALYTIC – SYNTHETIC DISTINCTION 1 Axel Mueller

In the following, I want to revisit the criticism of the analytic–synthetic distinction brought forth in Putnam’s “The Analytic and the Synthetic” and later writings and compare it with Quine’s familiar attack on the same distinction in the last two sections of “Two Dogmas of Empiricism”. My purpose in this comparison will be to find the features of Putnam’s argument that prepare the ground for...
